Family Award Sweet Spots (And The Kids' Discounts Nobody Mentions)

Every award chart prices per seat, so a family of four pays four times the number in the blog headline. That math is why this guide exists: a handful of programs genuinely discount children's awards, a handful of redemptions scale beautifully to four people — and one internet-famous sweet spot quietly doesn't work for families at all.

The Kids' Award Discounts

Most programs charge a 6-year-old exactly what they charge you. These are the verified exceptions:

The one most useful to US families is Flying Blue — because Chase, Amex, Capital One, Citi and Bilt all transfer there. The discount is real money: a business seat to Paris that costs an adult 60,000 miles costs the 8-year-old next to them 45,000. Two adults + two kids saves 30,000 miles versus four adult fares — most of a fifth ticket over a couple of trips.

The Companion Pass Is The Biggest Family Discount In Travel

Southwest's Companion Pass makes one person fly with you for just taxes and fees — from $5.60 each way — on cash and points bookings alike, for up to nearly two years. A family of four with one pass pays for three seats, every trip, the whole time. It gets its own guide, because it deserves one.

Hyatt: The Rare Chart That Prices Per Room

Hotel points are where family math flips in your favor: Hyatt awards are priced per room, not per person, and standard rooms allow up to four guests. A Hyatt Place with two queens and a sofa bed swallows a family of four on one standard award — and most US Hyatt Place locations still include breakfast (a small pilot is testing paid breakfast, so glance before you book). The exception to know: Hyatt's all-inclusive resorts price per person, adding roughly 6,500–29,000 points per extra guest per night. Avios Short-Haul: Fast, But Count It Times Four

Avios on American's domestic nonstops is the classic "get to the beach" play — but it was devalued in December 2025, so update your mental math: flights up to 650 miles now run 13,500 Avios one-way (18,000 up to 1,151 miles), per person, no kid discount. Four people on a 600-mile hop is 54,000 Avios each way. Still occasionally worth it against ugly cash fares — run it through the cents per point calculator — but the old 9,000-Avios legend is history. On non-American partners the short-haul bands are cheaper (6,500 economy under 650 miles).

Aeroplan: The Stopover That Multiplies The Trip

Aeroplan lets you add a stopover of up to 45 days on a one-way international award for 5,000 points per passenger — 20,000 points total for a family of four to turn one trip into two destinations (say, a week in Paris wedged into a Greece itinerary). The Famous One That Doesn't Scale

Virgin Atlantic points on ANA to Japan is one of the internet's favorite sweet spots — 52,500–60,000 points each way in business from the US — and it's real. What the headlines skip: ANA typically releases one or two partner award seats per flight, bookings are phone-only, and Virgin can't book it inside 14 days of departure.
